Tahoe Regional Planning Agency
California-Nevada Joint Agency
South Tahoe, California USA
According to the agency, he Tahoe Regional Planning Agency's missions is to "cooperatively lead the effort to preserve, restore and enhance the unique natural and human environment of the Lake Tahoe region now and in the future."
A program was evaluated for transferring developing rights from target "transfer out" zones to other development sites (so-called "transfer in" zones in the TRPA region.
The Tahoe Basin is one of the uniquely beautiful natural settings in the U.S. The mountains and valleys overlooking the lake have been sculpted over the course of several million years, creating a lake wenty-two miles long and 12-miles wide with 72-miles of shoreline. Lake Tahoe is the 3rd deepest lake in North America, some 1,645 feet at its greatest depth.
The first people to known to the Tahoe Basin were the "Washoe" Native Americans. Mark Twain visited the area in 1861 and proclaimed the lake to be "the fairest picture the whole earth affords!" The first European American to see the lake was Lt. John C. Fremont, who in February 1844, on Valentine's Day, viewed the lake and put Tahoe on a map for the first time.
