A "theme park" is a relatively modern term for a kind of amusement park popularized by Walt Disney, where the rides, shows, amenities, dining, and other attractions within the facility are all organized thematically through the construct of a singular "big idea."

Disneyland as an example, was created pursuant to the big idea of eternal childhood as embodied by Disney's characters. Universal Studios theme parks have been organized and themed according to the idea that guests may "ride the movies."

Theme parks are distinguished from ordinary amusement parks primarily through these thematic "big idea" structures, and, the major capital spending that is required.

Theme parks and their amusement park brethren, are inheritors of the fairs and pleasure gardens of Elizabethan England that date back almost 900 years ago. The state and county fairs common to the U.S. and many other countries over the last two centuries, have also had an influence on modern amusement and theme parks.
